Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Once you have identified the location and area of traffic you would like to count, our trained technician will install a Motionloft sensor at your location. The installation point requires a clear line of sight to the area of interest and access to continuous power. We will connect the sensor to our online application so that it can begin counting people or vehicles that pass by your location in real-time. We then set up an account on our online application so that you and your colleagues/clients have 24/7 access to your pedestrian and vehicle data as it happens.

CAN YOU COUNT PEOPLE INSIDE AS WELL AS OUTSIDE?

Yes, we can track pedestrian and vehicle traffic inside and outside. We provide data for the interior of malls and commercial buildings, sidewalks, doorway counts, parking garages, and more. If you can think of a place to count traffic, we can probably do it.

WHO ARE SOME OF THE CLIENTS THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING WITH OR HAVE WORKED WITH IN THE PAST?

We work with national property owners, REITS, large brokerage firms, major retailers and municipal organizations.

DO YOU PROVIDE YOUR SERVICE IN MY CITY?

Motionloft services all of North America! We have a network of trained installers servicing metros throughout the US, Canada and Mexico.

HOW DOES THE SENSOR GET POWER? IS IT JUST A PLUG?

The Motionloft sensor uses a standard plug that goes into a regular outlet. During the installation, a standard electrical cord is run from the sensor to the nearest 110V outlet. Motionloft also offers hardwiring options, battery backup (for outlets on timers), and solar solutions.

HOW QUICKLY CAN YOU HAVE A SENSOR UP AND RUNNING?

As long as we have an installation location that gives us the necessary height, a clear line of sight, and access to 24/7 power, we stand behind a 30 day lead time from the date a contract is signed to completed installation, even for larger projects. Installations for larger projects will have an installation schedule provided by Motionloft. Motionloft has dedicated installation and account management to work with you, to ensure a satisfactory outcome.

CAN THE SENSOR BE MOVED?

Our pricing is for one sensor at one specific location. This is due to the fact that we perform an extensive calibration on the device once it is installed to ensure maximum accuracy. In the event that the sensor must be moved due to construction or some unforeseen circumstance, a fee will be assessed to cover the cost of deinstallation, reinstallation, and calibration at the new location.

HOW ACCURATE IS YOUR DATA?

Our accuracy rates are upwards of 90%, depending on the site location characteristics. Each sensor is calibrated individually based on its unique traffic factors. Once a device is installed, our engineers calibrate for the distance to the pedestrians or vehicles, average size, average group size etc. That allows us to identify a person, group of persons or vehicle.

WHAT IS THE RANGE OF YOUR SENSOR?

We use computer vision technology and a high definition camera lense to view the scene and process the activity within its view. The range can vary based on the height of the installation, and at a 12 foot height, we have a 30 foot coverage area. Longer distances can be achieved by installing the sensor higher up and zooming the camera lens.

HOW BIG IS THE SENSOR?

The sensor measures roughly a 4.5” by 4.5” square with a 2” depth.

HOW MANY SENSORS WOULD YOU NEED FOR A LARGE PLACE LIKE A MALL?

That really depends on what our client is trying to understand at a given shopping center. For example, if the desire is to learn the overall activity of the shopping center, sensors can be placed at the entrances of the mall and at certain key points within the mall.

HOW ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING WITH/HELPING PROPERTY OWNERS AND BROKERS?

We work with brokers and property owners to help satisfy specific location data needs. We have helped retail clients in their site selection process by helping them compare the foot traffic at two different locations. We have also helped clients lease their properties faster or at a better rate by proving the foot traffic outside. On the tenant side, we have helped clients understand their pedestrian capture rate and make more informed operational decisions by looking at the larger data trends over time.

DO YOU PROVIDE INFORMATION AT THE MARKET LEVEL, DO YOU AGGREGATE ANY OF YOUR DATA UP TO A CITY OR NEIGHBORHOOD?

Currently, we are focusing on providing hyperlocal data to our clients on a location-by-location basis. There are certain markets where our sensor network is dense enough to provide market level data in an aggregate and anonymous fashion, but this data is available on a case by case basis. If you have a specific area you are interested in, please let us know and we will tell you if we can support your request.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT FORMATS IN WHICH THE DATA CAN BE PRESENTED?

The data is presented to you in a variety of different graphs and visualization tools in our online application. We also have a variety of reports that can be downloaded in PDF or PNG formats, as well as a raw data download in CSV. or API format

CAN YOU OFFER ANY SORT OF FREE PILOT OR DISCOUNT TO TRY THE TECHNOLOGY?

We offer our 30 day pilot price for customers that would like to try out our solution.

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE SENSOR?

We currently operate under two main pricing models. One is a short-term 30 day study that clients usually use for things like site selection, and location-to-location comparisons. The other model is a longer term, year-long study that clients use to understand the larger trends in data over time. Pricing is quoted after analyzing the site and determining the quantity of devices needed to service the project. Please call our sales team at (415) 625-0162 for a price specific to your project.

WHAT ARE SITUATIONS THAT RESTRICT YOU FROM BEING ABLE TO GET A SENSOR UP?

If there isn’t a clear line of sight from the installation location to the area that we are trying to capture, or if there is no power at the location, our sensor will not function accurately.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH INSTALLATION PERMISSIONS?

We work with retail tenant clients across the country to install our sensors in prospective locations by working with their local brokers and landlord contacts in each market.

CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME UNIQUE EXAMPLES OF HOW TO USE YOUR DATA?

    • We have done studies to identify which entrance is a dominant entrance to a retail store so that one entrance can be closed.
    • We have done capture rate studies in open air areas that that are typically difficult to understand.
    • We have grouped sensors and the data to be able to gather pedestrian activity for large open areas.
    • We have done internal usage studies on how buildings are used and where people go in them.
    • We have provided data for purchase decisions of investment buildings.
